SS Rajamouli’s RRR, which broke box-office records left, right and centre, will have a sequel. While film enthusiasts and the general audience felt the scope for the sequel was limited as the story reached a conclusion, Rajamouli, known to pull a rabbit out of a hat, announced that his father K Vijayendra Prasad is working on RRR 2.
“I would absolutely love to do that. I can’t reveal many details about it. My father is a story writer for all my films, including RRR. We discussed a bit about it (RRR 2) and he is working on the story,” said Rajamouli to a query on the possibility of RRR2. He was speaking in a Chicago theatre post the special screening of RRR. The attendance naturally erupted in joy listening to the declaration.
However, the sequel might not happen immediately as Rajamouli is next committed to making a globe-trotting action adventure with superstar Mahesh Babu. While details about this project are scarce, it’s likely it will move to floors sometime in the second half of next year.
Meanwhile, RRR, the third highest-grossing Indian film, is continuing its dream run in Japan where it opened last month. So far it has sold more tickets (JPY 209 million) than the Aamir Khan-starrier 3 Idiots (JPY 170 million) and is on its way to surpassing the collections of Baahubali: The Conclusion (JPY 300 million). It remains to be seen whether it will have the legs to collect more than superstar Rajinikanth-starrier Muthu (JPY 400 million), which remains the highest-grossing Indian film there.
